Denver Broncos 2009 Playoff Scenarios
Are Cutler's true colors coming out? Is the McD fiasco just what Cutler needed to jump ship? Blowing off the team owner is one way to get fired/traded.
"McDaniels made it clear to the quarterback how the team will be run, and how Cutler was expected to fit into that plan. McDaniels reiterated the Broncos position that they have no intention of trading Cutler, but he also made it clear that all players are being constantly evaluated and could be traded if management thinks it will make the team better."
If this is the way it went down with no friendly "sorry for the confusion" , "just business / no offense intended" and/or "we're not going to trade you because we like you as a player" (how about "REALLY like"?)
If it was like that... like "this is how it is, we don't care how you feel about it..."
Wow.
My boss is your average good kind of boss to work for. I'm very well aware that his word is law but he doesn't feel it necessary to flaunt this. He is considerate of my pride and my feelings. If he wasn't, I'd find another boss. Especially as I am a valuable employee and expect to be treated as such. Is this childish?
ok, let me go back to WE KNOW NOTHING
I doubt they were inconsiderate to him and visa versa. I expect these folks who really are best served by working together to preserve both of their jobs and any chance of winning in the next few years... will soon be getting along just fine.
We really are starving for drama these days eh East?
Pay close attention to the next few months, especially as we get closer to the draft. Expect a draft day surprise that may have Chris Simms starting at QB with a rookie QB being drafted.
So tell me all of you who keep saying Cutler is a baby and needs to grow up; how does he move past this until McDaniels continues to lie? Where is the trust? Where is the respect. Does not matter if your NFL QB or mailman, you deserve honesty. This is not a arrogant spoiled athlete thing, its a treating other humans right thing.
I don't think I'm "desperate for drama." You can say all you want about "what we don't know." The fact is what we do know is that Cutler blew off the owner of the franchise, and that is completely unacceptable. I'm not sure how you overlooked that tidbit right there.
What can you say about Cutler? He bit the hand that feeds. Bowlen signs all of his paychecks and he straight snubbed him. Cutler thinks he's Jesus H Christ right now and that's poison to any team. NFL.com confirmed that Cutler refused to take Bowlen's calls till Monday, but he can sure take his money whenever he wants. I'm not saying you are but, how can you possibly stand behind a QB like that?
I think you were confusing "the boss" with McDaniels instead of Pat Bowlen. I understand your analogy of your boss respecting you and treating you as a valuable member of the team, but you don't get payed a few million to do what you do. Professional athletes are held to a higher standard like politicians whether they like it or not.
It doesn't matter what position you play or how many freaking Super Bowls you've won. If the owner calls you, you get back with him as soon as you can. The fact that Cutler wouldn't respond to Pat Bowlen speaks about his character.
So no, I'm not desperate for drama, and we do know something. I'm just telling it like it is, and you have to agree with me in that sense.
jchase - I'm sure he's just being sarcastic.
You couldn't be farther from the truth. McDaniels is progressing the team and Cutler is living in his "me first" world. Whether he means to or not Jay Cutler is tearing apart the franchise. You do not see McDaniels making childish comments to the media, but of course you just say he's lying, where it's having tact. Cutler is trying to act like he runs the team, and he doesn't.
It doesn't matter what happened 2 weeks ago it's about the now. Cutler needs to shut the hell up and do what it takes to improve.
The fact that Cutler didn't return Bowlen's calls is despicable, and you cannot disagree about that.
That is a cop-out. Tell me one healthy relationship you have in your life that does not have trust. So spare me all the "Cutler needs to be a professional" stuff. I bet if you had someone at your work who lied to you and then would not own up to it, it would have an adverse effect on your working relationship.
So as soon as you can tell me one healthy relationship you have in your life that does not have trust then I will cede my point. Until then Cutler has a right to be pissed at a guy who lied to him and does not have the decency to own up to it.
Enough ifs? I trust the media (sports or otherwise) like I would trust Bernie Madoff with my life savings, but IF Cutler, McD, GmX and Bowlen's conversation really went down this way, I have two points to make:
1. Cutler is cutting his own throat. He hasn't reached T.O.'s lofty standards of assinine behavior, but he's starting to act like him. I don't live in Denver, but it strikes me that (even before this mess) Cutler has a shaky reputation in the Mile High City that's not getting any better. I can't believe I'm saying it, but IF THIS IS TRUE (I can't say it enough), he's going to talk his way out of a contract, with Denver or whoever else. I love his physical gifts, but he needs to shut the hell up.
2. Josh McDaniels is taking back this team. I thought Shanahan had a decent level of control over his players, but I'm thinking that in the last few years, he let the inmates run the asylum. I'm going to sound like an old fart, but the head coach is the man in charge. Those of you who love Cutler are going to hate hearing it, but it's true: McDaniels is the guy Bowlen hired and he's not going anywhere. McD needs to gain control and it starts at the top with #6.
Why should I address your point? You have no proof that McDaniels tried to trade Cutler. All McDaniels and Xanders have said is that they never intended trading him.
I do believe McDaniels was interested in trading Cutler and I don't blame him for it one bit. Cutler is a player and players can be traded. Do I agree with McDaniels? No. Cutler can be miffed just like Sharpe said when he heard about his trade but he needs to get over it and win. Whether it is a dumb choice or not McDaniels can do what he wants and Cutler has no room to get angry about it, especially not in the form of not picking up Bowlen's calls. There's addressing your points for you.
@Mr. East Really? I have no proof that McDaniels!? Other than Schefter, Mortenson, Williamson, Peter King and every other respectable reporter stating it. Yup, no proof at all.
Every reporter in the know has said that McDaniels got caught with his hands in the cookie jar and is now trying to deny it. Cutler was not even mad until McDaniels decided to then not own up to it.
And yes I am not refuting that McDaniels can do what he wants, he can trade Cutler for a long snapper if he wants, but this does not mean he has the right to lie about it.
So keep dodging the question of how a coach can lead a team, and instill a team first mentality when he does not practice honesty and respect?
So Mr. East you may have healthy relationships in your life that thrive on lying but I don't have have never met others who do.
The way Cutler is acting (and man I enjoyed him up til all this), playing for the Lions might serve him right. He may even like it, Calvin Johnson, close to Santa Clause...I'm out of advantages.
Chris Mortenson reported it, now it must be true, ask Bob Stoops.
Not only can McDaniels do what he wants, Cutler has to be okay with it as well. Cutler was mad the whole way, don't even try to defend him. If you want to exalt Peter King then read his report about Cutler asking for a trade. What do you think about that? Where is the trust in that relationship right there? How about when McDaniels first became the coach and Cutler blew off talking to him for a week. How is that a trustful relationship right there?
Josh McDaniels considered trading Jay Cutler and didn't. Thats what happened. How's that for dodging a question for you?
And don't you bring my personal life into this. You don't know anything about me and if you have to do that it really just shows how little you know about football. That is completely disrespectful poking fun that I have relationships that thrive on lying. Keep it to football and be respectful, something I have to tell you and Jay Cutler.
And no one brought your personal life into it, don't be so sensitive. It is you who is resorting to personal attack. I was simply saying that it is consistent to for Cutler to expect honesty in his relationships since ALL humans expect it, including yourself. So cool it with "disrespectful" nonsense and trying to lecture me, your off base and over reading into things.
I am sure you are a great guy and we would probably get along great over a beer, but I fundamentally disagree with you in the idea that leadership and authority include not having to treat people with honesty. Leadership at its core is influence and you do this by getting people to buy in. So tell me how you get to a team first mindset in which everyone buys in to what the coach is selling without honesty? You don't.
My point is that this isn't about our personal lives, I wasn't being sensitve. We cannot begin to make a comparison because this is about business. The whole point of playing in the NFL is to win a Super Bowl no matter who is around you or what they do. If you are a true professional you get the job done no matter what. In 30 years Cutler will kick himself if this all leads to the demise of his career.
Plate,
Cutler may be the face of the franchise but Pat Bowlen owns the franchise. There's no excuse for not pick up his calls. So don't blindly back your QB. McDaniels has nothing to apologize for, he considered trading him and then didn't. End of story. Cutler wants to still cry and split apart the team, how is that leadership?
1. Don't trade Cutler
2. Wait for the DENVER BRONCOS to make a statement.
3. If anybody ever says "a person close to the source", you should immediately throw out the validity.
4. Stop feeding off of the media.
Exactly. The unfortunate thing is though that it won't be that smooth. We're in for a rough offseason, but I think by training camp things will get a lot better.
Why? Why would you ever want to trade a UNIQUE and DEVELOPING Quarterback... for an UNPROVEN 50/50 chance at talent?
That would be THE DUMBEST MOVE IN BRONCO HISTORY!
1) Cutler asked to be traded
2) Other teams try to aquire Cutler but McDaniels doesn't trade him.
3) Cutler becomes outraged when he heard that his name was in trade talks.
4) McDaniels says he never intended on trading Cutler.
5) Cutler refuses to talk to Bowlen or McDaniels
McDaniels is building the team where Cutler is tearing it apart. Cutler needs to be held accountable, McDaniels has been doing his job Cutler is just complaining.
It was broken at all ends of the spectrum.
McDaniels made a back up (who was sacked the most in the NFL) a star. McDaniels took a bunch of no name running backs to the 6th best run offense in the NFL.

Look what we have is a failure to communicate! First of all, all athletes are not the SAME. I am not sure how this came to that (Johnson left Troy Aikman on the tarp after the superbowl-he sure wasn't going to do it before!) You are entitled to run your organization as you see fit, but YOU will have to live with the consequences. This guy will be gone and where does that leave you-behind the eight ball trying to convince the nfl that your replacement is spectacular? please! You haven't had alot of big time problems so this is really new territory, but I'll tell you this TRADING JAY CUTLER WON'T HELP YOU OR JOSH-YOU'LL BOTH SUFFER. Your front office sounds more like an audition for comedy hour and laugh at Jerry Jones all you want, but he wouldn't have stood for this being played out allover the nation. You have a weak owner who hired the looney tune characters to run the office and you have become a complete laughing stock. We can't believe that you don't know what to do. Say what you want about Jerry Jones and laugh it up, but you won't be laughing when we take the former coach and your quarterback! Keep up the good work, with this economy we need all the laughs we can get!
MOJO RISING
When Craig Morton was quarterbacking our team during our first superbowl run, I remember him being checked into a hospital after leaving the field at the end of the game. He remained there all week, checking out a few hours before the next game. Had one of his better games, won the game and went back to the Hospital for two more days. Compare and contrast his behavior with Cutler. Indeed 7(Morton's number)> 6.
The only point I agree with you on (though i generally DO agree with you) is that Cutler needs to return Bowlen's calls. He will I imagine. I think he'll be at work Monday when he's due to be right? If my boss left messages during my vacation (especially after pissing me off) I'd feel zero obligation to get back with him til Monday.
1. How dumb to compare salaries. Right is right.
2. Also How dumb to put words and behavior in Cutler's mouth! He's hardly said anything! Outraged? Maybe but I sure didn't hear it! He said he's upset and he said why he was upset in very few, simple words. So?
3. he talked to McDaniels today right? kills your #5 right?
4. How is Cutler tearing apart the team? Has he ranted, raved or even really criticized anyone in the organization? Has he missed a practice? Missed a workout? Missed a meeting? Held out for more money? Been arrested? Tearing apart the team?
Please!
5. "Cutler’s whiny arrogant behavior". Could you reference this please? Bit the hand that feeds? How? Refused to answer the phone UNTIL MONDAY but takes his money? He DID answer the phone and he IS living up to every letter of his contract as far as I can see!! A good deal so far at that!!
You're the only one whining here. What's your real beef with JC? God I bet you hated Elway when he first landed here after tearing apart Indy's team right?
You keep saying they never intended to trade Cutler... What does that mean? They never pulled the trigger? Ok. But they for sure considered it. And I believe as Cutler does, as schefter reported, that THEY SHOPPED HIM. Bottom line. They considered their options (which is fine as even Cutler said!!) and basically lied about it.
Lie to me and see how quick I jump up from my vacation to return your calls! Especially a seemingly surly one like the one (probably mis-) reported today.
I'm still behind the new powers that be but they screwed up.
That said, BOTH sides better get to fixing what we're likely making way too much of anyway, or we'll all be very sorry.
Did anyone notice the slant of the replies to that story? ha!
East? You piss me off! That's ok though, I don't respect many folks here even enough to reply. Get on with your bad self! (and wrong opinion of Cutler ...lol!)
1-5 Go Broncos
I don't get where his "me first" attiude is coming from. He helps out in the community, allowed B-Marsh to stay at his pad and went over game plans and threw with him after practicing all day when he was suspended, he insisted Kerry Collins take the second spot at the pro bowl because he is a 14 year vet, then he pulls this crap? Would the real Jay Cutler please stand up?
McD is bush league. He ist he complete opposite if Jay Cutler in that he is dishonest, and refuses to speak about anything. Hopefully once the OTA's start, these opposites will attract, and a fearsome offense will develop.
Mr. East, I respect what you have to say, but I don't totally agree with it all of it. I can't say that I disagree completely either. Jay said he wanted to lay low for a while, and I'm sure people (the media) were pestering him incessantly. I would have turned my phone off too. Perhaps he pulled an office space, and blew off his boss, or maybe he had his phone off. Everything is pure speculation, so as I have said, I will give the guy who is more tenured in Denver the benefit of the doubt until the source close to the situation is Jay or McD themselves.
The media is just another type of government with a tight grip on your family jewels.
(I dont Know Maybe all the players they've let go I guess that just says maybe they just didn't wanna cheat not saying that Head Coach Josh McDaniels is like that other guy (Bill B.) we'll see how it goes lets all pray for the best.)
AND GO BRONCOS!
Both sides were wrong McDaniels probably should have told Cutler that teams have been calling about trading for him,and if the right proposal comes up,we might take it! Then Cutler might not have reacted like he has! Cutler just needs to get over himself!! If Shannon Sharpe was tradeable than so could Cutler!!!! Maybe he did think that McDaniels lied to him but maybe he should have meet him face to face to get the facts straight instead of hearing it from another person. Whatever happens I hope it happens soon this is getting really old really quick!!!!
This is crazy! I have never heard of a 3rd year quarteback who hasn't even made the palyoffs. Trying to dictate like has as proved something. don't get my wrong I want Jay to remain our quaterback, but not if he's going to act like some little Bi*** (and Chris Simms is not the answer).Well all,Wait and see what happen this could be a case of Josh Mclittle trying to trun the mile high city to Foxboro. An finnally the only person that can truly fix this is Mr.Pat Bowlen,he signs the checks and he needs to tell then both how things are going to go. So to all my fellow bronco fans' i hope like you this is all fixed,we make the playoffs and do not be looking back for Shanahan..
I have relationships at work with people I don't trust to do things 100% correctly. But I have to work with them anyway, don't I? Somehow, for the good of the project and the client, we get things done anyway, rather than stomping our feet and whining about life not being fair, and complaining about "she hit me first!"
And also, speaking of trust, it's clear it's Cutler's people leaking all this BS, unless you think its Xander's interns somehow on these calls and sending out Twitter updates.. If trying to attack your coach and team management through anonymous, gossipy leaks isn't unprofessional, I don't know what is...
Cutler needs to get his own house in order and deal with a mess he's contributed to creating by piquing interest around the lead when he hinted at a trade when Shanny was fired.
Cutler can batten down the hatches and actually try to solve this thing, or he can continue dragging his feet, whining and behaving astoundingly passive aggressive about the whole ordeal.
Victim's Complex, thy name is Jay Cutler.
count me as one for McD. I agree with Hastings: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/danpatrick/blo...
Not so good for the Broncos however. It looks like the the 2 phone calls not returned to Bowlen turned the tide. Telling your starting QB to get in line at this point will not produce good results. I think he's long gone. And McDumbshit better be looking for a new QB.
Forget it, alot of fans will back Cutler blindly because they are hurt at the fact McD tried to trade him. In my opinion a grown ass man shouldnt pout every time something doesnt go his way. A team leader doesnt blame his defense in losses, an elite quarterback let's his play do his talking for him... but Cutler is not elite.
I'm thinking if Cutler doesnt show up Monday, you trade him... cut the cord now. I'm so annoyed at Cutler thinking everyone has to bend over for him. Bottom line in my opinion Cutler wants out, he doesnt want to be apart of this team, and the trade talks were his opportunity. Think about it, when the trade was discussed his reaction wasnt "let me talk to the organization, or I have no comment" ..... his initial comments were "I liked it here, but I guess I'm not going to be here" ....
Mr East .... alot of people are Cutler fans first and Broncos Fans second. Cutler hasnt done anything for us, people say he had no defense well Indy won a superbowl with no defense.
Cutler is a above average Cutler back, who has mental lapses and can win you a game, however AS WE HAVE SEEN IN DENVER he can cost you a game by throwing 2-3 Ints.
DENVER BRONCOS ORGANIZATION ... end this annoying period in our team history if he misses Monday then you trade his whiny little bitch ass.
Jay Cutler is a bigger Punk than Phillip Rivers, and I never thought I'd say that. At least Rivers sticks it to the other team, not his own team.
Ok Jay Cutler lovers, I'm ready for your backlash... proceed....
Mr Bowlen is fully committed to his coach, I think Cutler was spoiled because of Shanahan's man crush on him. If Cutler does not fall into line he will be traded, and you know what? ... The Broncos will survive, The Broncos will win, Jay Cutler is not bigger than the Broncos... and I hate fans that are treating him like he is the savior we have been waiting for ... The only thing he has saved his from since his time in Denver is getting to watch playoff games.
Jay Cutler decided in his heart that he no longer wanted to be part of the Bronco organization when Shannahan was fired . . . period.
He was extremely unhappy with Pat Bowlen and felt betrayed that this man could have fired his coach . . .
He did not know McD or Xanders at the time . . . and it didn't matter . . .
When they were hired . . . losing Jeremy Bates . . . the trade fiasco . . . have all poured fuel on the flames . . .
He has not answered Pat Bowlen's phone calls for one reason . . . he does not like Pat Bowlen and no longer wants to work for the man.
Unless it comes strait out of Adam Schefters mouth, don't believe it!
Cutler is hyper-sensitive, a whiner, who might be seeing big change on the horizon and thinks McD is going to reel his arm back in. But his arm is a Howitzer, he can make the impossible throws, and he's got the chip on his shoulder attitude of that QB who says: give me two minutes and the ball at the 5, we'll get the 6pts. Its love/hate for him. We all want him to keep his mouth shut but we all want him to keep throwing those bee-bees in an orange and blue jerrsey. Out of 17-20, how many games can we honestly say he was at fault for the loss? Start looking at the other side of the ball people, Shanny (all praise due to him) had no idea what he was doing in drafting/signing defensive players.
McD, you obviously F'd up with this whole thing. How could this idiot think that Cassel is better? How could he think we'd ever get equal value back? To everyone saying trade for the #1 and get Stafford, are you really football fans? What are the chances that a rookie can come in a replace a young Pro Bowl QB just starting to reach his prime? I get it though, your team your rules, lay down the law. I got no problem with that. But as the boss, you don;t try and reconcile with your most important employee by saying "any and all players could be traded." Give me a break, try and be original and not pull this Belichek crap, be your own man, not some cheap carbon copy of a robot. Work this mess out and get on the same page. If he loses Cutler, what are the chances he loses several players? Better than 50/50. He wants to be the boss, damage control is the key.
Last point, I don;t care if you're right or wrong, but if the man who signs your checks calls you, you don't let it get to him calling you back a second time. Period. Now that's a lack of respect plain and simple. I'm sure Cutler's parents didn;t raise him to be that way, and I'd actually like to see what they have to say about the way he's handled this.
Long post, sorry.
ALL, meaning every single article, is written for a 5th grade reading level. That also leaves the door open to false interpretation (like the avbove 70 something posts) spin (this "source"), judgment, false leads and generally, almost always, not the entire truth.
Just give it some time. You guys dove all over this about 3 hours after it happened. When has the full story EVER come out that quickly.
And please tell me who you would WANT to trade cutler for. Derek Anderson? Brady Quin? Vince Young? Matt Lienert?
How about we go to the colts and try to get Peyton Manning or the Giants and get Elie. Hell I hear that the Steelers are shopeing Big Ben (you see what i did... i went media style).
You're not going to get anyone better than Cutler. Only lesser QBs. Not to mention that they whole point behind the NFL is to win a Championship. How is trading away you best chance (you're reasons: he's a cry baby, he's immature...nice excuses. You guys sound like you 6 years old) of winning a championship.
I'll say this again. WAIT FOR THE DENVER BRONCOS ORGANIZATION TO MAKE A STATEMENT BEFORE YOU JUST TO CONCLUSIONS.
Stav - Well put.
T-Money - It's always great to see you create the bold command in the comments haha.
(dee) - It's tormenting these days. We all just have to wait for the workouts come Monday and see how that goes. All I know is that I wouldn't want to be Josh McDaniels.
Thanks for your prophecy it really means so much to everyone on this site. Please tell me everything else that's going to happen in the next 4-5 years I'm very curious.
Respect is a two way road. McDaniels needs to respect that Cutler is the franchise QB and Cutler needs to respect that McDaniels is the head coach and he can do what he wants.
Perhaps they should compromise and meet in Missouri to talk... haha.
You should write these stories. You are 100% right on most of these topics, or we just think alike.
For news and sports. Ingnore the media until you here it from the source.(Cutler or Mcdaniels) We have talked about gossip for a week and a half now. Getting old..
A senior Analyst . . . a source “with the force” has just revealed that Jay Cutler flew to Tampon Bay over the weekend . . . .
Disguised as Ziggy Marley . . . Jay put aside his Tuoca wineskin and left-handed cigarette long enough to say he was crushed by the revelation that Bill Belichick was really his father and that Philip Rivers was his long estranged brother . . .
. . . said Jay, “I don’t care where I land, as long as it is the left coast of Florida . . . can you dig these palm trees? . . . I’m tired of freezing my can off . . . getting my can kicked and yelled at all the time by everybody . . . even Philip gives me grief and they ended 8-8! . . . anyway . . . if you think I’m going to show up Monday for some kind of conditioning crap . . . sit back . . . roll another fat one . . . and this time don’t bogart the damn thing! . . .
The senior analyst stated . . . “That whole Pro-Bowl thing was stressful for Jay . . . and all the goings on in the last few weeks have presented him with far too many aspects to consider what with these off-season conditioning programs and such . . . maybe in a few more weeks he will be “with the force” . . . but probably not anywhere that it’s cold.” . . .
Thanks . . . and we’ll call you . . . .
That was the most interesting and strangest thing I have ever read in my time at Bronco Talk. Thank you for that.
I'm hoping that he fires Bus Cook over the weekend and shows up Monday at Dove Valley . . . I do not believe he is going to find happiness or a better matched team to play with in the NFL than Denver . . . . unfortunately . . . the grass always looks greener. . . .
He can take over the team . . . show up Monday . . . state that this is "My team" . . . . and solidify a leadership role . . . .
Pat Bowlen will turn to McD and say . . . "told you" . . . and McD will realize that trading Jay won't ever be an option . . .
If he does not show up . . . that opportunity will be lost . . . and what happens from there is a crapshoot . . .
